Vanilla Glaze Cinnamon Bun Icing - Smooth, Sweet, and Easy

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 12 servings

Ingredients

  • Powdered sugar (confectioners’ sugar): The base of the glaze. Sift it if it looks clumpy.
  • Milk or cream: Milk makes a lighter glaze; cream gives extra richness. Use dairy-free milk if needed.
  • Unsalted butter (optional but recommended): A tablespoon adds shine and a velvety finish.
  • Pure vanilla extract: The star flavor. Use good-quality extract or vanilla bean paste for extra depth.
  • Salt: Just a pinch to balance the sweetness.
  • Optional add-ins: A little maple syrup, almond extract, or a splash of brewed coffee for nuance.

Method

  1. Measure your base: Add 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar to a medium bowl. If it’s lumpy, sift it for a smoother glaze.
  2. Melt the butter: If using, melt 1 tablespoon unsalted butter and let it cool slightly so it doesn’t melt the sugar on contact.
  3. Add liquids: Pour in 2–3 tablespoons milk or cream, the melted butter, 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract, and a small pinch of salt.
  4. Whisk until smooth: Start slow to avoid a sugar cloud, then whisk until glossy and lump-free. The glaze should ribbon off the whisk and sit on itself for a second before sinking in.
  5. Adjust consistency: If too thick, add milk 1 teaspoon at a time. If too thin, whisk in 1–2 tablespoons more powdered sugar. Aim for a pourable but clingy texture.
  6. Glaze warm buns: Let cinnamon buns cool for 5–10 minutes after baking, then spoon or drizzle the glaze over the tops. The residual warmth helps it melt into all the crevices.
  7. Set and serve: Let the glaze set for 5–10 minutes. Serve warm for the dreamiest texture.
